In the midst of all the family sessions going on right now, it’s nice to be able to capture a few images of my own family. Wish I could post my little sister’s full family picture with these two, but I wouldn’t dare ruin her Christmas cards by spilling the beans!

I totally believe that these little post-session peeks are necessary for me AND my clients’ sanity. I love seeing what ends up coming out of the camera, and so do they. I take the Sables’ family portraits every year, partially because Melissa is my BFF and she loves me AND my work.
One of the biggest benefits of taking pictures of people you already know is that they are up for new ideas and locations. This awesome spot was just waiting for me and this family. LOVE it.

While Jyl Torrens keeps Colusa County children dancing and developing, she has also been growing something special of her own. Jyl and her husband Matt welcomed Bauer into the world last week, and he is one of the most alert newborns I have ever seen! Most of our session, Bauer was more interested in checking out what was going on around him than sleeping. Luckily, he did finally settle down for a few sleepy shots. Thank you, Jyl and Matt, for the opportunity to capture some of Bauer’s first moments. He is certainly a sweetheart.

This sweet family was referred to me by my best friend. Vinny and Jenny have 2 1/2-year-old twins, and they were so adorable… But Emily and Jillian made me work for my shots! Here are a few to hold them over until I can finish their package.

Here’s a quick look into how family sessions are going this season. I decided I would only do limited sessions this year due to my heavy wedding season. Add that to the fact that it’s baby Zeke’s first year… I’m a pretty busy mommy. I would like to take this opportunity to remind future (and return) clients that you should definitely attempt to book next year’s holiday portraits as early as possible. Making plans for family photo sessions could even be considered as early as June and July. Photo schedules fill up fast – don’t miss out on an opportunity to book!

Meet my friend Heidi! She has been booking sessions for her beautiful family with me for years now, and is also working dilligently on getting a photography business off the ground. I was convinced that Melissa and Jonathan were expecting a little girl, and so were many of their friends and family. Melissa, however, thought all along that it felt like a boy. Turns out mommy knows best – Logan James was born August 21st, less than two weeks after this session took place.
This post is a good example of how sessions go when toddlers are involved – they have a very limited attention span and pictures go according to their schedule, not ours. Little Lance was a SUPER cutie:
But I am sure that many parents can relate to THIS, especially on picture day!
So we let Lance relax and do his own thing for a while…
Lance soon decided that pictures might not be SO bad:

And then our session completely changed direction with the appearance of an unexpected guest. With the introduction of this little guy, Lance became instantly animated:

Before I go into how amazing this family is, let me give you a picture of how long they have been coming to me for sessions. Let me take that back – I will give you multiple pictures!
The first session I had with Jessica, Jason, Jordyn and Jadyn was a family sitting. Looking back, they all have such baby faces!
Later on, Jessica decided she wanted a session with Jordyn and Jadyn together for Jordyn’s birthday. Look at how adorable these two are:
Cut to today. The Holt family has welcomed another member into their home – sweet little Jameson. I am so happy that Jessica contacted me to shoot Jameson’s newborn portraits. This family needed this session – a way to document their changes, their additions, and their beautiful personalities. I LOVE these little girls – they are spunky and wild and happy little beings. I am sure baby Jameson will be just as amazing. Congrats on your beautiful family, Jessica and Jason! And now that I think about it, this post has been about growth for all of us – MY growth included!
As I worked with Jameson, Jessica and Jordyn watched. I couldn’t help but grab this one of the two of them:
We had planned the session on Jessica’s birthday, so Jadyn and Jordyn were helping their grandmother bake mommy a cake. I had to get a couple of shots of Jadyn going to town on the nearly empty frosting container:
Later we went outside to grab some family shots. It was important to Jessica that we use this opportunity to capture one of the entire family together. Hopefully our next session won’t be too far off though!
I just can’t say it enough – I LOVE these girls!!!

And, as I mentioned Sunday night, I did a small shoot with my girls. Unfortunately, we are going to have to call this one a work in progress. Despite the fact that they did so well, as soon as we got to our location, brother fell asleep and kids started feeling sick. See why I never shoot my kids?!
